A trip to Lancaster Bakery could cure any sweet tooth. Seen on July 6, 1955, the bakery opened its doors on Gay St. on March 29, 1940. It was later moved to its location at 222 S. Main St. The bakery closed its doors in the early 1980s. (Photo by Lavoy Bauknight/THE LANCASTER ARCHIVE)

  • In South Carolina, dirt-track racing rivals religion. Viewed by many as racing at its purest form, fans gather on Saturday night across the state to empty their lungs and pump their fists. At Lancaster Motor Speedwayís half-mile track, drivers push pounds of mud away from their machines as they slingshot through turns at over 100 mph. It is, in fact, its own culture. Dreams of racing their own car one day are played out by Ronnie Watts, 6, left, and Lane Faulkenberry, 3, as they make their own dirt track in the infield while waiting for races to begin.

We're glad that No. 28 car is staying on the outside lane down the front stretch in this July 1962 image. Why? Because there were no rails in front of the fans at Lancaster Motor Speedway back then! Talk about getting close to the action! This is a great photograph to zoom into and check out all the details. If you look closely, you can see a car going into turn three in the background. <br />
